South to North

After two days spent in the awe inspiring Iguazu we had to leave paradise behind.  Nevertheless,  i was promised by a reliable source that, in Brazil, paradise has many shapes and sizes, and that Jericoacoara (you need to be hammered to pronounce it) is equally a little piece of heaven.

So this time we really did wake up at the crack of dawn to catch an early flight from Iguazu to Fortaleza, the closest major city to our destination, from the far south to the far north of the country (check out the map to get the idea.)

On touching down at Fortaleza airport we had a quick look to see that our bags had arrived with us

before being picked up by our driver Paulo and his trusty 4x4 ready for a 5 hour cross country trip to the isolated coastal village of Jericoacoara which is only accessible via a drive down the beach.

The hot, dry climate in this part of the country, in contrast to the humid tropical climate of Iguacu, and the fact that it hadn't rained seriously in two years, produced semi-arid scenes characterized by the Carnauba  alm. Unique to this part of the world, the branches of this palm produce Carnauba dust. which is shipped to the UK to produce a high quality polish for various surfaces.

As we got off-road, the drive became a little bumpy, requiring some emergency measures to protect the little grey cells from impact with the ceiling.  This gives me the opportunity to introduce some of our travel companions cousin Benny from San Francisco and his wife Yelena from Ukraina, not actually wearing bras on their heads even though it looks like it.

Of our arrival in Jericoacoara by night, i don't have much to show after a wonderful yet tiring day's travel.  A quick snap of our other travel companions, Benny's sister Lyora (on the left) and Iris' friend Adi (on the right), on the beach with moonlight was all i could muster.

Yet the new day revealed what the night could not, including our cute, green rented apartment

which came together with our maid William who would do all the house work for us.  This is the life!

Apart from the odd voodoo-like painting on the wall (please comment on what you think is the meaning of this strangeness),

this would do more than nicely as a base for our adventures in Jeri for the next 3 to 4 days.
